So I must admit something to you all…I am a kitty lover. There I said it. We currently have two mostly lovely, snuggly, and adorable kitties and they couldn’t be any different personality wise. One is incredibly shy, AKA “Scaredy Cat,” AKA “Mama.” She is a beautiful Maine Coon cross with double/triple paws and came to us as a stray living in our garage seven years ago.
Here is her story:
I had been working at a veterinarians office at the time and decided, for the sake and well being of our indoor kitties (we had two kitties back then as well) and all of the other neighborhood cats, I would bring her in for her vaccines and to be spayed. Well lo and behold, the vet said she was pregnant (hence the name Mama) which meant two things 1) she couldn’t be spayed that day and 2) because it was the middle of winter we would have to let her live out her pregnancy in the comfort and warmth of our home. Ahhhh at this point we are a three cat household…this is bordering on crazy cat people right? Anyway, our plan was to let her gestate, have her kittens, wean them, and then we would then try to find homes for all of them including her. It seems like a reasonable plan right?!? Well it didn’t quite work out that way — several weeks had passed and I didn’t notice Mama gaining any weight. I should say here that cats have a 63 day gestation so after several weeks we should have at least seen her put on some weight, if not already have kittens running around by now. I am not a very patient person in general and also I was getting worried about her health and that of the unborn kittens, so back into the kitty crate and off to the vet we went. It was confirmed by an x-ray that she was indeed NOT pregnant. The vet apologized for his mistake claiming she must have been VERY constipated that day and we had a good laugh. At this point, however, we had bonded with her and couldn’t just release her back out into the cold and finding a good home for an adult cat proved to be difficult, so she stayed and her name, for the sake of irony, stuck. She has definitely become a part of our family even if we only see her at night when it is time for her daily snuggles.
Mama, we are so glad you chose our garage to call your home when you had no other. We are truly blessed to have you in our lives.
Love,
Kristin
